Russia has confirmed that Uganda will become a BRICS partner on Jan. 1, 2025, along with eight other countries: Belarus, Bolivia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, and Uzbekistan.

These nations will join the BRICS alliance as partner countries, but won’t have the same rights as official members, such as voting power and unrestricted participation in summits and meetings.

The BRICS partnership is seen as a way for these countries to enhance their economic diplomacy and cooperation on trade, investments, and special projects. They will also gain access to funding from the BRICS development bank and the Contingency Reserve Arrangement, a mechanism to overcome financial crises. Bitcoin.Com News

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja during a press briefing in Nairobi.[File, Standard]

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for the resignation of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, citing his failure to uphold his core mandate of protecting Kenyans.

This demand comes amid a national outcry over the alleged abductions of social media users critical of President William Ruto’s administration.

In a statement on Friday, December 27, LSK President Faith Odhiambo described the police's denial of involvement in the enforced disappearances as inadequate.

"If the holder of this office is incapable of fulfilling that mandate, it would be in the nation's best interest for him to either rise to the occasion and discharge his duties effectively or tender his resignation forthwith. Anything less would amount to a betrayal of public trust," she said.

Odhiambo also called for clarity on the statement by the police IG denying police involvement in the abductions.

"It is insufficient for the Inspector General of Police to merely deny police involvement in these abductions without explicitly outlining the steps being taken to address these egregious violations. The Inspector General appears to lack awareness of his mandate under the law or the ability to discharge it effectively. This is a grave abdication of duty that cannot be tolerated in a constitutional democracy,” said the LSK President.

Odhiambo urged the police to investigate and prosecute those responsible, reassure Kenyans of their safety, and work with other security agencies to restore public trust.

On Thursday, Kanja dismissed allegations linking police officers to the recent wave of abductions targeting young Kenyans. He assured the public that no police station in the country was holding any of the reported abductees.

"For the avoidance of doubt, the National Police Service is not involved in any abductions, and there is no police station in the country detaining the reported abductees," he said. By Winfrey Owino, The Standard

Voters in more than 17 African countries made up a sizable portion of the estimated 3.7 billion people who cast ballots across the globe in 2024. Now, with the year of elections drawing to a close, many Africans are looking ahead to 2025 as a “year of momentum.”

For starters, Africans across the continent will be marking a slew of landmark occasions with which to propel that momentum forward. Mozambique, Cabo Verde and Sao Tome and Principe will celebrate 50 years of independence from Portuguese colonial rule, while Gambia will commemorate the 60th anniversary of its independence from the United Kingdom.

Later in the year, the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, will turn 50, while the East African Community will mark the 25th anniversary of its reestablishment.

Next year will also see a number of momentous occasions on the political and diplomatic agenda. The African Union will formally appoint a new set of leaders, including the chairperson of its standing commission, at its leaders’ summit in February. At that same meeting, Angolan President Joao Lourenco will assume the organization’s one-year rotating chair.

AU leaders will also gather with their counterparts from the European Union for the seventh AU-EU summit, while African states will join the collective festivities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

The African Development Bank, or AfDB, will elect a new president to replace Akinwumi Adesina, who will step down after serving two terms. And South Africa, which assumed the G20 presidency on Dec. 1, will close out its term by hosting the group’s summit next fall. WPR
