Governor of Jonglei state Dr. Riek Gai Kok

Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok has submitted a new list of cabinet nominees to President Salva Kiir, following the leak of an earlier version that sparked public outcry.

The initial list, sent to the president on Aug. 5, proposed a partial reshuffle of the state government, including the dismissal of seven ministers and the replacement of Bor County Commissioner James Gai Makoor with former commissioner Ateny Pech. The letter was leaked to social media shortly after submission, leading to controversy among residents and civil society groups.

Activists criticized the state government for failing to maintain confidentiality, warning that the breach could lead to unrest.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Saturday, Manath Gany Lual, press secretary in the governor’s office, described the leak as “unfortunate” and confirmed that a revised list had been submitted.

“We are still in Juba awaiting the appointment of the cabinet. A new list has been submitted to President Salva Kiir for appointment,” Lual said. “The leaking of the previous list is not from us but from individuals in the Office of the President, possibly because people they favored were missing from the list.”

He said the governor remains committed to service delivery and will return to Jonglei once the deputy governor and new cabinet members are appointed.

“The list is already in the Office of the President,” Lual said. “The delays are due to the busy schedule in that office.”
