East Africa

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has blacklisted a Chinese-based firm for 12 months for allegedly engaging in fraudulent activities in the East African region.

A statement shared by AfDB shows that the firm was flagged after failing to disclose full information while submitting a bid for a tender. The continental lender pointed out that the firm in question failed to disclose information such as the use of a commission agent in its application.

As a consequence, the company will be blocked from participating in tenders floated by the lender during the stipulated period.

The firm will also be required to work in tandem with the Office of Integrity and Anti-Corruption as well as regulatory authorities of AfDB member countries to assist in their investigations.

After the 12-month window lapses, the firm will be required to implement an integrity compliance program in line with the bank's guidelines.

AfDB is a global lender that helps African countries to achieve their economic development goals. The bank has been key in unlocking billions earmarked for major projects in Kenya including Ksh15.2 billion worth of climate financing announced on January 19, 2024.

The global lender blacklists companies found to have engaged in corrupt or questionable practices.

Upon conclusion of investigations, AfDB determines whether the company should be allowed to continue transacting business with  it.

The announcement is set to affect several projects initiated by the firm in Kenya.

The company has been involved in multiple projects in Kenya including constructing major highways

Instructively, the company was awarded the tender for reconstructing a dated bridge in Northern Kenya and a 3-kilometre road at the Coast.

In Tanzania, the company was involved in constructing a 413-kilometre road tipped to enhance movement between Tanzania and Zambia. By Brian Kimani, Kenyans.co.ke
