In a powerful blend of education, innovation, and heart, TVET Workspace Africa – a new initiative founded by UK-based engineer Jonathan Hodgkison – is transforming opportunities for young people across The Gambia.

Through a mix of practical training, digital technology, and creative engagement, the project aims to industrialize the nation from within by empowering its youth with real-world skills. Bridging the Gap in Technical Education.

The initiative bridges a long-standing gap in technical and vocational education by connecting students, teachers, and workshops through the TVET Workspace App — an easy-to-use platform offering training materials, challenges, and rewards.

The project has already partnered with local schools, ActionAid Gambia, and with support from community leaders including Hon. Omar Jatto Jammeh, Member of Parliament for Janjanbureh. By using the app, students gain access to structured training in digital literacy, engineering, entrepreneurship, and practical trade skills — all designed to equip them for meaningful work and independence.

Innovation, Technology, and the Bear Brigade At the core of TVET Workspace Africa is innovation. The app introduces gamified learning through Bear Coins and AI-powered rewards, making education engaging and motivational.

The digital mascot universe, known as the Bear Brigade, features colourful cartoon mentors such as JonBear the Engineer and AI Bear, who guide students through skill-building challenges, hands-on projects, and national competitions.

This creative, tech-driven model is already inspiring students across The Gambia to learn, compete, and dream bigger. A Mission with Heart For founder Jonathan Hodgkison, the project is deeply personal. After 18 years as an engineer — including a decade in the aerospace industry with Airbus — he felt a calling to give back and help others reach their potential.

“I did it because I could, and I did,” Jonathan says, reflecting on the mission that began with a few donated tools and a vision to empower others through opportunity. “If played right, this could change the world forever.” The story of TVET Workspace Africa is one of courage, creativity, and connection — proving that real change begins when experience meets purpose.
