By JULIUS MBALUTO

UK Prime Minister has resigned paving the way for a contest within his party to decide their next labour Party leader who will also be the new Prime Minister of the United  Kingdom. In his emotional speech earlier, Keir Stammer said:

"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general elections. That is why I will resign as the leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to his Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision. Every decision I have taken, its about putting the country I love first. I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour party to set up a timetable with nominations opening on 9th of July and completed by summer recess.

In the case of contest this will ensure a new leader in place before parliament returns in September. I will remain in post as Prime Minister until the contest is complete and I will do everything I can, to ensure an orderly handover of power. I will also give my successor my full and unequivocal support knowing that they will inherit a Britain which is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited 2 years ago. "

Keir Starmer took office as the Prime Minister in July 2024 after a landslide victory at the General election and was in power only for 23 Months. During his time in office, he oversaw huge decline in popularity, he experienced mounting pressure from his own MPs and discontent within his Labour party increased. His party experienced losses during last local elections.

Keir Starmer was blamed for the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as the US Ambassador who was linked to the controversial case surrounding Jefffrey Epstein, a sex Offender in the US. When new information came about Jeffrey Epstein and his connections to Lord Mandelson, the former UK US Ambassador was sacked.

His resignation was prompted also by Andy Burnharm's victory in Makerfield by-election. The outstanding results was seen by Labour Party members as prove that the former Greater Manchester Mayor is able to beat Reform Party in a way which Keir Starmer couldn't. Andy Burnham has since thanked Prime Minster Keir Starmer for his Leadership and said the country now expects stability.
