Machakos Governor on Sunday, April 16, declared her stance on the ongoing political stalemate pitting President William Ruto against Azimio Leader Raila Odinga.
The governor who was speaking during President Ruto’s visit to Machakos County castigated a section of political leaders from the region.
Responding to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's call for a clamp down on protesters, Wavinya noted that some utterances were unfortunate.
“As leaders, we should be considerate before taking some hardline stances.
“Even if we have political differences in our region that should not play out in the national arena,” she warned regional leaders drawn from the Lower Eastern region.
Advising local residents, Wavinya advised them not to listen to what the leaders had spoken about concerning demonstrations.
“Do not get excited and be swayed by any politician about seeking to divide you on political affiliations.
“Politicians only pretend to be enemies but in reality, they are bosom friends behind the scenes so do not be duped,” she advised.
The former Kathiani Member of Parliament further revealed that there were secret consultations between the government and the opposition.
“Your Excellency the President, with your Deputy you sat down with Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua and called for a truce,” she remarked.
On whether she will join demonstrations, she stated that she was only interested in development.
Despite her refusal to join the protests, Wavinya revealed that there should be no handshake between the government and the opposition.
“We need a government that has checks and balances, a vibrant opposition will be able to hold the government accountable,” she explained why she was opposed to a handshake.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua congratulated Wavinya for her stance noting that her move would ensure development in the region. By Kioko Nyamasyo, Kenyans.co.ke
