The newly appointed secretary of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Eastern Equatoria State said on Monday he would prioritise party unity and grassroots mobilisation ahead of general elections in December 2026.

Akileo Mboya Peter made the remarks after being sworn in at the SPLM state secretariat in Torit following his appointment by the party’s national leadership last month.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mboya said strengthening cohesion within the party and expanding outreach to communities across the state would be among his key priorities.

He said the SPLM was preparing for the proposed elections through political organisation, voter mobilisation and civic education campaigns aimed at increasing public awareness of the electoral process.

“The party is ready for the elections,” Mboya said. “Our task is to prepare politically, strategically and organisationally, and to mobilise our people.”

South Sudan’s elections are currently scheduled for December 2026 after several postponements since the country’s independence in 2011.

Mboya also called for peace and stability, saying a secure environment would be necessary for political mobilisation and election preparations.

His appointment follows a reshuffle announced by SPLM Secretary-General Akol Paul Kordit on May 25, replacing German Charles Ojok as the party’s state secretary in Eastern Equatoria.

Ojok, who served in the position for more than five years, said he accepted the decision and would continue supporting the party in his new role.

Eastern Equatoria Governor Louis Lobong Lojore, who also chairs the SPLM in the state, thanked Ojok for his service and urged newly appointed officials to focus on their responsibilities.

“You are expected to fulfil a responsibility,” Lobong told the officials after they took the oath of office. Radio Tamazuj
