South Sudanese fighter James Majok Gau was crowned the champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC) Muay Thai belt in Africa, following a thrilling showdown in Juba on Saturday.

Majok, who already boasts two championships, the World Muay Thai Association Championship Belt and the World Muay Thai Organization Championship Belt, defeated Tanzanian Emmanuel Shija to clinch another international title. Shija is Tanzania’s Muay Thai Champion.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Puro Okelo Obob, President of South Sudan Kickboxing Federation (SSKF), said the victory was a win for the country.

“The match was a thrilling one. Majok dominated Shija of Tanzania, with Shija not having any chance to fight back,” he stated. “Majok was dominant, and we stopped the fight in the second round to crown South Sudan as Africa WBC Muay Thai Champion.”

Puro, who also serves as the SSKF’s head coach, urged South Sudanese to throw their support behind the martial arts and other sports.

“The victory in this 79th category is not just for Majok or the federation, but for South Sudan as a whole. Let us support sports because it will support our economy and attract investment,” he said.

For South Sudan, hosting the WBC Muay Thai Championship represents more than just a sporting event; it symbolizes a chance to unite the nation through sport and enhance its international reputation. Sporting events like this can foster national pride, encourage participation in physical activities, and promote healthy lifestyles among the youth. Moreover, the economic impact of such an event can be significant, drawing visitors to the region, stimulating local businesses, and showcasing South Sudan’s potential as a host for international competitions.

Majok expressed enthusiasm for competing in the prestigious event and for being crowned the champion.

“This is a victory for South Sudan, and we are happy that we have our heads up,” Majok said.

The Tanzanian contender conceded defeat and thanked South Sudan for the hospitality accorded him.

Established in 2004, WBC Muay Thai is an international organization that promotes and sanctions Muay Thai competitions worldwide. It is recognized for rating fighters and awarding championship belts across different regions. The WBC’s commitment to promoting this ancient martial art form has played a crucial role in elevating its status globally, including in Africa.   Radio Tamazuj
