Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua have condoled with, and offered their sympathy to, the 33 families that lost their loved ones in Tharaka Nithi accident.
In a statement released on Monday, Raila cautioned motorists to observe the highway code while driving.
"Azimio camp send their deepest condolences to all those who have lost family, friends, and loved ones in the very unfortunate and tragic incident," according to the statement.
"To those still fighting for their lives in hospital, we pray that they get a speedy recovery and we thank the medical personnel attending to them. This is a difficult moment for these families and our campaign prays for them to get comfort and fortitude,"
His remarks come after at least 33 people died after a bus plunged into River Nithi in Tharaka Nithi county at around 6 pm on Sunday.
The driver of the Modern Coast bus lost control of the vehicle and slid off the road, plunging into the river along the Meru - Mombasa highway.
Eastern Regional Commissioner Evans Achoki told the Star on Monday morning that the fatalities had increased to 33.
Tharaka Nithi county commissioner Robert Komora said a further ten people are being treated with serious injuries.
Kenya Red Cross was able to rescue some of the victims, who were rushed to the hospital.
The injured were admitted to Chuka County Referral Hospital and PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital. The Star
