  • Green Park Bus Terminal officially opens to the public  COURTESY NMS

  • The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has released a timetable that public service vehicles (PSVs) will follow as the much-awaited Green Park Bus Terminal starts operations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 18, NMS stated that Public Service vehicle operators and the general public will start using the Green Park Bus Terminal in phases.

NMS stated that from May 24, 2022, all PSVs plying Ngong' Road and Argwings Kodhek Road will pick up and drop passengers at the Green Park Bus Terminal, and will not be allowed to proceed to the Central Business District (CBD) as has been the norm.

From May 27, 2022, all PSVs plying Lang'ata Road will pick up and drop off passengers at the same terminal.

The new terminal will handle traffic from Ngong Road, Langata Road/Raila Odinga Road, Argwings Kodhek Road, Bunyala Road and Lusaka Road.

"Green Park Terminal is part of the Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan (NIUPLAN), a multi-agency project that seeks to ensure a reliable and efficient transport system in the city," the NMS stated on Tuesday.

"The terminal aims to decongest the CBD of vehicular traffic, reduce travel time, improve commuter experiences and encourage the use of public transport as a preference to private transport."

The delay in the opening of the Ksh250 million Green Park Terminal was due to the construction of the Nairobi Expressway which runs from Mlolongo to James Gichuru Road in Westlands.

Other terminals being constructed in the city include Bunyala, Workshop Road terminal, Desai, and Park Road termini in Ngara which will serve different routes in the city.

According to NMS officials, the long term plan is to introduce an intelligent transport system that will see over 107 roundabouts in Nairobi removed and reinstalled to fit the modern traffic circulation.

"Intelligent transport is system is a very good system which can reduce traffic jam to a greater extent in the city. We have already done some test runs and it is set to be fully implemented when all the terminals are opened."  By Mumbi Mutuko, Kenyans.co.ke
