Members of Parliament in Kenya have voted and successfully impeached the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The impeachment is first of its kind in Kenyan politics and was all possible under the 2010 Constitution.
After lengthy presentations from the Legislators and as well DP Gachagua who was in parliament to defend himself, 281 legislators vote to see him go, 44 legislators voted to defend him.
The motion was moved by MP Mwengi Mutuse representing Kibwezi West Constituency. He needed 233 legislators to force the motion through but he got a lot more. Initially, 291 Members of Parliament had signed in support of the motion but 10 dropped last minute.
The battle is not over for DP Gachagua as the Senate will be the next stage. Senators are expected to debate and vote as well. The DP was forced by Parliament to apologise for using derogatory language against legislators during a television interview. The Speaker of the House Moses Wetangula told the DP that the language he had used during his press briefing was abhorrent.
DP Rigathi Gachagua apologised. He faced 11 charges ranging from undermining the President, causing divisions among Kenyans by calling Kenya a company and arguing that the major shareholders are those who voted for Kenya Kwanza government, corruption, undermining national security, coercing the sale of his late brother's properties, Lowering the respect of the Office of Deputy President among othe
