The 13th Chinese medical team in South Sudan on Saturday donated mooncakes, powdered milk and other gifts to children at the Confident Children out of Conflict orphanage in the country's capital, as part of Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations.

Robert Bida Samson, executive director of the charity, praised the long-standing partnership with Chinese doctors, saying that it has reduced the orphanage's medical costs.

"We are no longer facing major challenges on the issues of medicine and treatment," Bida said.

The center currently cares for about 52 children, including some who fled fighting in neighbouring Sudan, Bida added.

Zhang Erqing, team leader of the 13th batch of the Chinese medical team, said they regularly visit orphanages in Juba and have brought mooncakes to symbolize unity and convey good wishes.

Over the past 12 years, a total of 180 Chinese medical workers have served in South Sudan, treating more than 80,000 patients, performing over 1,400 surgeries and saving nearly 2,700 critically ill patients, Zhang said. ■ Xinhua
