Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana has warned that attacks towards the commission could lay the ground for the rejection of the general election results in 2027.

Speaking on Wednesday during an interview at NTV, Mukhwana blamed politicians for making unverified utterances that have significantly affected public trust and confidence in the electoral body. Mukhwana maintained that it is in the interest of Kenyans that the IEBC performs its duties effectively and not its leadership.

“So, if we do not create and sustain and build momentum towards rebuilding the trust and confidence of Kenyans in the IEBC, this is the scenario. That when finally, IEBC will preside over these elections in 2027, the ground would have been prepared for rejection of the results, either way. And the result would be that whoever wins will not be accepted, and whoever loses will not accept.” Argued Mukhwana.

According to the Commissioner, whatever is happening before the electoral period is very likely to impact the electoral period and eventually what is perceived as the outcome of the election.

He asserts that the IEBC will do everything in its power to ensure electoral rules and regulations are followed.

Additionally, Mukhwana has called out public officials participating in electoral misconduct contrary to the law, saying that they have made their work difficult by reinforcing public perception that the Commission is in bed with the government.

Mukhwana has called on members of the public to shun politicians who deliberately inflame the country through tribal politics and fragmentation, an action he believes will ensure they have no choice but to learn from their actions. Citizen Digital
