The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has commenced investigations into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who died following a fatal road accident on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

According to the DCI, the fatal crash occurred at the Karai area along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway, involving Jirongo’s vehicle and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus, operated by Climax Company Limited. Preliminary findings indicate the accident involved a head-on collision.

“The collision occurred at approximately 02:19 A.M., resulting in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 metres away,” DCI stated.

The DCI says a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed to the scene, where they conducted initial examinations and secured key exhibits.

Detectives also recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, which has since been subjected to preliminary analysis.

Police say that the footage shows Jirongo drove into the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. from the Nairobi direction but did not fuel.

At 2:19:10 a.m., he stopped at the station’s exit before making a right turn at 2:19:19 a.m., driving back towards Nairobi. A moment later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into his vehicle.

Detectives have further interrogated the PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base.

He was released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and is required to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for further action.

Detectives have also recorded statements from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom witnessed events leading up to the accident.

DCI said that investigations are ongoing, with the forensic team expected to revisit the scene for additional analysis.

Detectives are also examining Jirongo’s movements before the crash, including recording statements from individuals he interacted with on the night in question, particularly those present during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant, Nairobi.

“Further analysis of the CCTV footage is underway, and additional statements will be recorded from passengers aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus and other witnesses. Upon completion, a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for perusal and advice,” DCI stated.
