Kenyans on Twitter have taken to social media to share their views on the proposal by Kenya Power to review electricity charges.

The company wants to increase electricity prices by up to 78 per cent.

If approved by Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Kenya Power will increase the cost of a unit of power for the usage of fewer than 30 kilowatts(kWh)) per month to Sh28.01 a unit.

Consumers under this tariff band will pay 35.3 per cent more than the current Sh20.70 for every unit of power.

50-kilowatt a month will pay Sh36.92 a unit from the current Sh20.70, representing a 78.3 per cent jump in electricity costs for households.

KOT have called on EPRA, to dismiss the proposal as the cost of living is still high, and people are trying to make ends meet.

Others have called on President William Ruto to stop the process, as that will affect the operation of the country, as so many industries use power for production, manufacturing and processing.

"Kenya Power and Lighting Company has proposed to increase the price of electricity by 78% by April. The proposal is before EPRA for approval. Imagine we are screaming that the current prices go down but someone thinks they are not high enough. This is ridiculous!" a Kenyan tweeted.

"In case EPRA approves KenyaPower increased electricity tariffs we need to seek legal measures to end KPLC’s monopoly and have EPRA overhauled as well. What a joke!"  By Manny Onyango, The Star
